Deadly Sin Advertisement

Ad From: Carls Jr.
Time: 2014

This advertisement does not attempt to hide the deadly sin that it uses.  In this advertisement the deadly sins of lust, greed, and gluttony.  Upon looking at this add it is obvious that the advertisers use this ad in the little picture the Carls Jr. (also known as Hardees on the East Coast) is trying to persuade their audience, whom are hungry Americans, that this burger is the perfect burger and that it is delicious in every way.  In the larger picture this photo is associated with sex and with being masculine.  This is shown through the text, it states, "She'll tell you size doesn't matter. She's lying".  This along with a sexy photo of Paris Hilton gives the audience the feelings of lust, want for the burger and Paris, Greed to have her all to themselves, and also gluttony the need to have the entire burger, which is more than any person should eat.

The audience, as previously mentioned, are Americans that are hungry or whom are attracted to women like Paris Hilton.  This audience could be anyone who has around 10 dollars to afford the meal or anyone who can simply make it to a Hardees or Carls Jr.  The culture would be one where the majority of the citizens enjoy red meat.  This is because this advertisement would not bode well in India where a majority of the population does not consume red meat.  Also, it is likely a culture that allows and enjoys women nudity.  In the middle east this may ad may not be a good choice because revealing this much of a woman and putting the woman into a power role would not go over well with the population.  Also, the allusion to penis size makes it is obvious that the audience is meant to be men.

The creator of this ad uses layout, language, and image to show off their product.  The use of the photo of an attractive model who is scantly clad holding a cheeseburger with the words "She'll tell you size doesn't matter. She's lying" are specifically used to arouse the audience and  to have the audience members associate sex and lust with their product, which is a cheeseburger.  This plays into the stereotyped idea that only men eat large cheeseburgers.  This is shown through how the model is a woman.  She is being used to target the men, proving that this is a "manly" burger and should be viewed as so.  This no longer conforms with society and the ideas of who loves who, but in the context of this add and the allusion to penis size it is obvious that the audience is meant to be men.

  1. I really like your analysis of this scandy ad. I agree that men obviously are the primary target but I would like to discuss how women are also a large targeted audience. Women most times want to be thought of as pretty or sexy if not by men, by other women, or by themselves. When women see this ad the a reminded that men are motivated by gluttony and lust. But I think that for the purposes of this assignment it was much smarter to analyze the male audience and the lust and gluttony the ad creates. Good analysis :)

  2. Nick-
Be sure you do more with the little picture- look at and cite specific examples of format, structure, language, etc. It will strengthen your analysis and provide more depth/ examination of effect in your big picture

  3. Wow, I am quite surprised that people can get away with creating adds like this, Hardy's is especially notorious. I like how you connected the add to much more than just the obvious lust. I do not think that I would have considered Greed or gluttony myself. This add is so directed to men it is as if they don't care if women even eat at Hardy's anymore. Great analysis.

  5. I like that you chose this advertisement for I think it really expresses the three deadly sins you stated being lust, greed, and gluttony. It is really obvious to see how this ad relates to lust but I thought it was interesting how you also incorporated greed and gluttony.

  6. Hey Nick! I really enjoyed reading your blogpost I can tell you spent a lot of time analyzing the advertisement. I agree with a lot of what you said about the advertisement portraying the sins of lust, greed, and gluttony. However, I thought it was interesting when you said the ad makes it " obvious that the audience is meant to be men," because I would argue the audience would also consist of women. Even though Paris Hilton, the model, is attractive to men, I think that the audience also consist of women because they want to look just as beautiful as her. She is portrayed as skinny, and sexy despite the fact that she is eating an unhealthy cheeseburger that contains a lot of calories and fat. However, since Paris Hilton appears to like the cheeseburger and support the fast food restaurant, the audience may start to think that they can still have a desirable body and eat this unhealthy food like she does. Many people idolize Paris Hilton for her image, and knowing that she is able to look how she does and eat what she wants may make women want to be the same way. Thus, I'd argue the audience contains more than men. Additionally, I thought it was really interesting that you said "In the middle east this may not be a good choice because revealing this much of a woman and putting the woman into a power role would not go over well with the population". I thought this was interesting because when I read this I disagreed, thinking the ad didn't portray women in a power role. I think that women and their bodies are objectified in the advertisement because it shows that women do in fact believe, "size does matter" and that appearance is important to them (as made evident by Paris Hilton and her desirable looks). I really liked reading your perspective of this advertisement, because it opened my mind up to new ideas. I can't wait to read what you write next! Great job!

  7. Hey Nick,

I totally agree with your analysis of the advertisement however I wish you had analysed the advertisement itself more, such as the color scheme, positioning of Paris, and the line at the bottom that says, "It's gonna get messy." I feel as if these would have made your already fantastic argument even stronger. Overall, you had an extremely strong post and I look forward to seeing what else you create.

  8. Great analysis!! I think that it is also important to note that Paris Hilton is standing next to a faded out jumbo SUV in the background. This is important for two reasons. 1) In our culture, men place great emphasis on cars. Having a large vehicle in the background contributes to the appeal for the specific audience. 2) Black SUVs are generally associated with exclusivity and this adds to greed as a deadly sin. Overall, you had an amazing post!!
